2000: Green starts
as an open-mic poetry reading by Damon Rutledge. Cited as a sister
reading to Da Poetry Lounge in Hollywood, Green emanates from Tanner's
Coffee in Culver City. DJ Jedi becomes involved as sound selector
shortly thereafter.
2002: Green
moves to the Good Hurt Club in Mar Vista. It is then that beatboxer
Joshua Silverstein starts sitting in from time to time, and when
Ratpack Slim begins guest hosting.
2003: Damon
hands the reins over to Slim full time. It is then when the current
Green crew is assembled officially. Upon relocating to the UnUrban
Cafe, the permanent line-up becomes Jedi on turntables, Joshua on
beatbox and co-hosting, and Slim hosting. Micah Chambers-Goldberg
throws down live art during performances, making him Green's first
resident artist.
2005: Green
welcomes DJ Mikecheck as Jedi's replacement whilst on tour. Gang
Green (the first slam team born of the new management) is formed.
--Green is a free-speech zone. If you sign up
to read, you have three minutes to express yourself however you
want.
--Our choice of music reflects that as well. Green deejays Jedi
and MikeCheck spin everything from rock to electronica to rare grooves
to hip hop and back again. And Joshua Silverstein is one of the
best beatboxers in the country, bridging the gap between hip hop
and jazz with his one-of-a-kind performances.
--We believe that at Green we have one of the most eclectic and
truly diverse open mics in the city. Poets rub shoulders with comics
with musicians to create an atmosphere where anything might happen.
And some nights it really does.
--Our regulars will not bore you. I promise. They range from literary
poets to musicians to underground comics, and Green is their place
to let it all out. They may push the envelope. They may shock. They
may offend. But they have a point. Come by and listen.
--We have features every freakin' week. Some of the poets and performers
who have graced our stage: Mike McGee (more than anyone else), Rachel
Kann, Besskepp, Jason Bayani, Paradox, Anacron, Gina Loring, Charles
Ellik, Buddy Wakefield, D-Knowledge, Emily Wells, Wanda Coleman...the
list goes on. We try to spotlight the talent in the community as
well as welcoming poets from all over the country (and beyond!).
--Green cares about you, dude. No, really. It does.
